As most of you know, I recently changed careers to follow my true passion...animal welfare. Joining the amazing team at the Lawrence Humane Society has been an incredible experience. Every day, we work together to create solutions that save lives. The only thing keeping us from taking this vital work to the next level is our building. A lot has changed with regard to housing and caring for homeless animals since our current facility was built. While we remain a leader in the region and follow the latest animal sheltering best practices, it's time we had a building that supported, rather than obstructed, our efforts. I can say from personal expereince that dealing with this facility's limitations and issues on a daily basis is truly a distratction from our work.

Every pet deserves a happy, healthy life. For more than 3,800 lost and homeless animals in our community each year, that chance begins at the Lawrence Humane Society.

The Lawrence Humane Society is a critically-needed local resource for Douglas County and Lawrence, but is being held back by limitations of an aging, inadequate, and failing facility that is long overdue for replacement. By building a new, state-of-the-art shelter facility, the benefits to both pets and people are clear: more lives will be saved; the number of homeless and abandoned animals will be reduced; and most importantly, families will be strengthened -- by having the space to find the right home for every pet, and by helping keep pets and people together for the long-haul.
